The Numis House seal

Authenticity Guarantee

Our lifetime promise: if any item bought on TNH is proven inauthentic, you get a full refund — no time limit.

1. The guarantee

If an item purchased on The Numis House — from TNH Direct or from any Vendor, at fixed price or at auction — is determined to be inauthentic, we will refund the full purchase price including original shipping. There is no time limit. The guarantee travels with the original purchase and applies to the original buyer.

“Inauthentic” means the item is not what it was sold as in a way that goes to its fundamental identity: a counterfeit or later fabrication; a genuine item with undisclosed material alteration (added mintmark, altered date, doctored serials or signatures); or a reproduction sold as an original.

2. What is not covered

  • Grade or condition opinions: grading is partly subjective; a difference of opinion about grade is not an authenticity failure (misdescription remedies in the Returns & Refunds Policy may still apply within their windows).
  • Attribution refinements that do not change identity (e.g., a different die variety of the same genuine issue).
  • Items altered, cleaned, damaged, or removed from certified slabs/holders after delivery.
  • Market value changes.

3. How a claim works

  • Email authenticity@thenumishouse.com with your order number, photographs, and the basis of your concern.
  • Evidence: a written opinion from a recognised authority — for coins, services such as PCGS or NGC; for paper money, PMG or PCGS Banknote; or an equivalent recognised expert body for the material concerned. If you prefer, TNH's numismatic team can arrange the examination.
  • If the item is certified inauthentic: full refund of purchase price and original shipping, plus reimbursement of reasonable, pre-agreed examination and return-shipping costs.
  • If the item is confirmed genuine: the item is returned to you; examination costs lie where they fall (yours if you commissioned it, ours if we did).

For Vendor items, the refund is charged back to the Vendor under the Vendor Terms — your refund does not depend on the Vendor's cooperation or solvency; TNH pays you and recovers from the Vendor.

4. Counterfeits are not returned to circulation

Confirmed counterfeit currency cannot lawfully be returned to the market. Depending on jurisdiction, confirmed counterfeits are surrendered to the relevant authority, permanently impounded and marked, or destroyed — as the law requires. You will receive documentation for your refund; you will not receive the counterfeit back. Where a counterfeit indicates deliberate fraud by a seller, we report it.

5. How we prevent problems in the first place

  • TNH Direct items are examined by our numismatic team before listing.
  • Vendors are vetted, identity-verified, and bound by authenticity warranties with financial consequences.
  • High-value items are photographed in detail (including serials and slab certification numbers) before dispatch, creating a verifiable record.
  • Certified items are checked against grading-service databases for reported thefts and invalid certification numbers.
