Cleaning coins: just don't (a cautionary tale)

A client brought me a beautiful East India Company rupee last week… that he had polished with metal cleaner. What would have been a $400 coin is now worth $60. PSA for newer collectors: original surfaces are everything. Never clean your coins.

Ouch. My grandfather polished his entire wheat cent collection in the 60s. Generational trauma.

We see this weekly at the verification desk. If a coin looks dirty, leave it — patina is provenance.
